Labor Government opens Otway Basin to new gas exploration

The Federal Labor Government has announced plans to open 2.5 million hectares of the Otway Basin to new gas exploration. If approved, this would allow gas companies to seismic blast and drill across a large pristine area of ocean. Alarmingly, the footprint of this release closely mirrors the area proposed by TGS/Schlumberger for 3D seismic blasting — a proposal our community successfully fought off in 2024. The government knows how strongly coastal communities oppose gas exploration in the Otway Basin — but they are pushing ahead anyway.

WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION:

1. Call Resources Minister Madeleine King's office (biggest impact)

Call Resources Minister Madeleine King's office on (08) 9527 9377 and tell them to stop the Otway gas expansion. A friendly staffer will answer, or it will take you to leave a message. You can say something along the lines of:

"Hi, my name is X, I live in X and I’m calling in regards to the 2025 Otway Offshore Petroleum Exploration Acreage Release. I’m really concerned about the impact that new gas projects will have on the marine life in this part of the ocean, as well as the impact that it will have on making climate change worse. The floods and fires we saw recently in Victoria were devastating, and we know that gas and fossil fuels are making these extreme weather events much worse. My message for Minister King is please do not release these areas of ocean for new gas exploration in the Otway Basin. Can you please pass on my message to the minister?"
