ABOUT US

We’re building a movement of coastal communities who are standing up to protect our ocean and climate from the destruction of the fossil fuel industry.

Our focus is on one of the biggest threats to our ocean and climate: fossil fuels. We are taking action to stop seismic blasting and new gas development in the Otway Basin, an area of the Southern Ocean off the coast of Tasmania and Victoria.

History:

OCEAN (Otway Coastal Environment Action Network) was formed in 2018 in Apollo Bay, originally named Otway Climate Emergency Action Network, with the aim of mobilising communities to take action on the climate crisis, through effective direct action methods. OCEAN's key focus quickly moved to on seismic blasting, the first step in offshore oil and gas development, and a key issue for coastal communities in Victoria. The idea was that we need to stop these new gas projects at the very first stage, a stage which is extremely damaging to the ocean.

OCEAN has grown immensely since it's inception and we now have over a thousand supporters right the way along the western Victorian coastline, from Ocean Grove to Portland and everywhere in between, as well as King Island off the coast of lutruwita/Tasmania.

Our wins:

In September 2024 we were successful, along with many other community groups and environmental organisations, in our 2+ year campaign to stop TGS and Schlumbergers plans for seismic blasting 7.7 million hectares of the Otway Basin. This was a huge win for coastal communities, the marine life of the Southern Ocean and the climate. You can read more about this campaign by clicking here.
